How Far Is Pokhara From Kathmandu?
By road, Kathmandu to Pokhara is roughly 200 km. The route mostly follows the Prithvi Highway, tracing the Trishuli and Marsyangdi river valleys before climbing into the hills around Pokhara.
How Long Does the Drive Take?
By private car, the journey typically takes 6–7 hours, including a short stop or two. Tourist buses cover the same route in a similar timeframe but on a fixed schedule, with less flexibility to stop. Road conditions, weather, and traffic through the Kathmandu valley rim can add time, so it's sensible to allow a full day for the trip rather than planning tight connections either side.
Car, Bus, or Flight?
- Private car: Most comfortable and flexible — choose your departure time, stop where you like, and travel door-to-door. Takes 6–7 hours.
- Tourist bus: Cheaper, fixed schedule, similar travel time, but shared and less flexible about stops.
- Domestic flight: Fastest option at roughly 25–30 minutes in the air, subject to weather delays and cancellations that are common in mountain flying.

Best Time of Day to Travel
Leaving Kathmandu early in the morning avoids the worst of the city's traffic and gets you into Pokhara with daylight to spare for your first evening by Phewa Lake. Night driving on Nepal's hill roads is best avoided where possible.
